AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP (ASP) has been in discussions with the FDA about its antidepressant Seroquel XR for the treatment of depressive disorder.
According to its statement, Seroquel XR is not intended to be an antidepressant and will only be used if a patient’s current mood stabilizers, including lithium and divalproex, are unsuitable.
Seroquel XR is approved for the treatment of major depressive disorder in adults, and is also approved for the treatment of bipolar disorder, which is a mental health condition characterized by extreme feelings of sadness and hopelessness.
Seroquel XR is also approved for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults, who are at an increased risk of developing bipolar disorder.

In the event that a new indication is approved for Seroquel XR, ASP will continue to conduct the following clinical studies:
1. A 12-week open-label trial of Seroquel XR for the treatment of major depressive disorder in adults is ongoing. The trial is designed to determine whether Seroquel XR is as effective as currently prescribed.
2. A 12-week open-label, placebo-controlled study will be conducted to evaluate the safety and efficacy of Seroquel XR for the treatment of major depressive disorder in adults.
The primary outcome measure will be the International Index ofondo, the Short Form Abuse and Attitudes Scale (SF-ABS).
3. A 12-week, open-label, pilot-scale study will be conducted to determine whether Seroquel XR is as effective as currently prescribed in the treatment of major depressive disorder in adults.
The primary study outcome measure will be the SF-36, a global mental health questionnaire.
The primary study endpoint will be the change from baseline in the International Index ofidepressant Disorders (IIEF-5), a standardized questionnaire that is used to evaluate the severity of depression and anxiety symptoms.
The secondary study endpoints will be the SF-36 Total score, the Global Index ofdepression, and the SF-36 of Major Depressive Disorder.
